Welcome, and thanks for visiting us

The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland (FRDW) are a group of residents who help to protect and enhance the woodland and the Stave Hill ecological park, which together run through the middle of the Rotherhithe peninsula.  We address everything from damaged signage and rubbish management to development planning applications which impact the local ecology.  We are on good terms with other local groups (details of whom can be found on the Other Local Groups page), and we have frequent dialogue with Southwark Council about the management of the Woodland area. In July 2009 we were awarded Green Flag status and in December the the London Tree and Woodland Award, achievements which pay a huge compliment to the hard work of those who have worked to make it such a terrific place. We are always keen to welcome people who would like to help out so if you would like to support the Friends by participating in our activities please see our Getting Involved page.

We currently also host the web pages for the Downtown Defence Campaign (DDC) on this site, although this section will be moved to a website of its own in 2010. The Downtown area  is immediately adjacent to the Russia Dock Woodland and is currently undergoing highly controversial planning applications  The DDC works to ensure that the planning application remains realistic, in spite of opposition from Southwark Council and Barratt Homes, to ensure the protection of the neighbouring Russia Dock Woodland, to which the site, and to look after the interests of Rotherhithe residents. See the Downtown Defence Campaign pages

We are proud of our oasis in this busy corner of London.  It supports a huge variety of plant, animal and bird life, some of it rare.  It is used and enjoyed by local residents of all ages, many of whom are very active in promoting its interests and are partly responsible for its ongoing improvements.

Membership of the Friends is free of charge and is open to everyone. To register as a member simply email Steve Cornish or Andie Byrnes (email details below).

The best ways of staying in touch with local news and all our activities are to check the news pages on this website and to join our email forum which acts as a central information distribution service and will keep you up to date with day to day topics.

You can find out more about our ongoing activities on our Recent News page, and links to other sites are shown on the Other Local Groups and Websites and the Photo Gallery pages.  A record of previous Friends meetings may be of interest to newcomers, or for reference about previous agreements and actions, and this is held on the Archive page
